Please make sure your Macbook supports audio output via Mini DisplayPort. Apple released its new Macbook Pro at the end of April, 2010 with new Mini DisplayPort which transmits audio signal. If your Macbook was made before that, its Mini DisplayPort does not transmit audio signal.
After Plugging in the Adapter, Navigate to: System preferences -> Sound, and select your Audio output Device.Thunderbolt compatible - Video/Audio will pass through Thunderbolt port
